The Old Castle and old Laval
The Old Castle, a medieval fortress with thick walls, shelters the Naive Art museum, one of the richest in France, highlighting a collection linked to Douanier Rousseau, a local figure. The cobbled lanes, Rue du Val-de-Mayenne and the stairways down to the river create a peaceful setting for a first date, both cultural and picturesque.
Along the Mayenne
The Mayenne flows through Laval under the Old Bridge, one of the rare inhabited medieval bridges in France. Landscaped quays welcome walkers and cyclists, from the town port to the neighbouring locks. A ride on a licence-free electric boat, then a drink on a terrace at Place du 11-Novembre, makes for a light date, ideal for long Saturdays.
Perrine Garden and cathedral
Above the old town, Perrine Garden offers a fine green setting with flowerbeds, an orangery and a plunging view over Laval. The Trinity Cathedral, discreet but moving, is worth a visit. On Lyad, people from Laval share their favourite places; it is up to you to find someone to extend the walk and build a connection with.
